Are Elastic Waists A Sustainable Choice?

Are Elastic Waists A Sustainable Choice?

Elastic waist garments have become a staple in most modern wardrobes — and for good reason. Comfortable, adaptable, and easy to wear — they are often the pieces we reach for again and again.

Once upon a time they were relegated to 'loungewear' but now elastic can even be found in tailored clothing — it's mainstream.

The more we love a garment, wear it and keep it, the lower its environmental impact — so in this context elastic waists make a strong case for sustainability. But there is one part of these garments which is rarely discussed:

the elastic itself

It's a small component, but an important one.

The Hidden Detail

Almost all elastic is made from synthetic materials — like polyester and/or elastane. This means even the most beautiful natural fabric garment can be hiding a significant chunk of plastic in it's waistband.

And this synthetic elastic is:

  • made from a non-renewable resource (fossil fuels)
  • non-biodegradable
  • often stretches out or loses integrity long before the garment is past it's prime
  • can feel stiff or uncomfortable, affecting garment feel and performance

A Simple Switch

If you're already using natural fabrics, switching up your elastic is a small change that can make a big difference.

We've sourced plastic-free elastics that are crafted from natural rubber (latex) and organic cotton or Tencel™ fibres. These elastics are soft, flexible and long-lasting with a lower environmental impact than conventional elastics.

For many garments it's one of the simplest swaps you can make!

In short

  • Elastic waists are a great design feature for creating adaptable clothing
  • Traditional elastics rely on fossil fuels, don't biodegrade and don't always perform well
  • Using natural elastic is a simple switch that can make a big difference on the feel of your garment and the impact on the planet
